Beginners Guide To Robotics- IV (Types of Robots - Air)
part 4(Go to part 3, Index page)
2) AIR/AERIAL:
1. Winged(aerodynamic) Aircraft:

Military Drone |
These are robots which use aerodynamic surfaces and high speed horizontal motion to generate the lift to make it fly. The horizontal motion is usually generated with the help of horizontally placed rotors or jet engines. Small scale RC aircraft are the most popular robots in this category.

a Robot - Types of Robots
part
3(Go to part 2, Index page)To build the robot we need to find what is the major task we want it to achieve. Like in my example-The major task of the saucer is to fly/hover. This is where the types and categories of Robots come in. Robots can be broadly classified into various categories based on their tasks and functionality:

Beginners Guide To Robotics- II (Building a Robot)
Building a Robot - Planning ( before you go shopping! )
part 2(Go to part 1, Index page)
“Robots are Machines. And Machines do specific Tasks...”“Doing a task” is thus a universal similarity in all robots. Converting the idea into a list of tasks and sub-tasks for the robot is the 2nd step to making a fully functional robot.

What is a Robot?
“Any machine in a way can be called a Robot!”Robots are not just human like machines with hands and legs(humanoids). They can also have wheels(wheeled robots), may have wings to fly(RC planes, Quad-copters),or may not be moving at all! They don't always have to be autonomous or be running on a microcontroller or a microprocessor. Robots can me simple machines like your pocket calculator or as complex as the curiosity rover.

My First Wheeled Bot Attempt....
Robotics isn't an easy subject to start with. Without knowing the basics jumping over to create fully functional bots is not a good idea. But its also true that learning it hands on is the best way of learning it. Most importantly it tests your patience. Expecting to get it right on the first try will only make you loose your interest. Only the truly enthusiastic survive!
